Heritage | Artist: Boet Nyariri | Stone: Springstone| Length x Width: 50cm x 20cm | Price: Price on Application
“HERITAGE” by Boet Nyariri. In the first week of February 2010, I started researching on the idea of starting an Art Gallery which had been in my mind for a few years. At the same time in Zimbabwe a young man was being honoured with a prestigious award in the Sculpture Category at National Arts Merit Awards(Zimbabwe). When I came across that article I took it upon myself to track down this talented sculptor and commission him to sculpt his interpretation of Heritage; a name I had chosen for my gallery. This was the beginning of an artistic relationship between Boet and Heritage Art Gallery. The result was this stunning piece of a mother carrying twins. The twins have theirs legs crossed and also holding something together showing their bond and sense of sharing.
I stand guilty in limiting Boet’s talent. He is used to making huge sculptures around 2metres tall or even taller, however since I was just starting out I requested that his piece be up to 50cm tall which he obliged. However in my next consignment there will be bigger pieces.
Heritage is sculpted in Springstone which is a very hard serpentine with high iron content and a fine texture, no cleavages, hard and firm offering a good resistance to the sculptor. Springstone has a rich outer "blanket" of reddish brown oxidised rock. They emerge from the quarry like sculptures created by nature millions of years ago and are often a source of inspiration to the artist. There are a few mines where this stone is found, but Guruve, in the north, is where springstone is mined. A beautiful dark stone, it polishes to a high shine because of it’s density. As with most other stones that are mined for the purpose of sculpting, this stone is mined by hand on communal lands. Springstone Moh’s hardness is 7-8.
